Vinterviken

Brothers and sisters - do you know Vinterviken? Vinterviken (Winter Bay)

Novel written by: Mats Wahl, 1993
Movie directed by: Harald Hamrell, 1996

The movie, Vinterviken, is based on a novel by the same name. It is a love story about two teenagers in a biracial relationship. The love story also involves violence, prejudice and strong feelings. It is a tough description of teenagers' brutal reality.

Vad är rätt? Vad är vänskap? Vad är kärlek?

John-John (David Tainton) lives in an apartment building in the slum area of a suburb to Stockholm, Sweden. He lives with his mother, his older sister and his horrible stepfather. John-John is 16 years old, black, a "criminal" and has had a rough childhood. He attends the drama line at his high school and boxes in his spare time.

Vinterviken is the bay that separates the two parts of the suburb. Elisabeth (Lina Englund) lives on the nice side of the bay. She has lived an over protective life and comes from a wealthy family; they have Miró paintings on the walls, listen to Satie and have a swimming pool in the garden.

Kom, mina barn med bruna garvade kinder,
följ mig i samlad trupp, håll edra vapen redo!

John-John and Elisabeth first meet when John-John saves Elisabeth's younger sister from drowning. Elisabeth's father brings John-John and his friend, Sluggo, home to give them a reward. There John-John meets Elisabeth who later becomes his first love.

John-John's only friend, Sluggo, persuades him to break into the house where Elisabeth's and her family live. On the first day of school after summer break John-John and Elisabeth meet again. They are in the same class at school - the drama line. As they get to know each other, their own drama starts to develop.

O Systrar, så längtar jag efter er att jag brinner om dagarna och brinner om nätterna.

Their love has its obstacles. They have both personal problems, and one mutual; Elisabeth's father does not aprove of her relationship with John-John.

Ni vet noll om min åtrå och längtan Systrar! Och ni vet alls ingenting om min lust.

Vinterviken is a very nice movie, and it is truly one of my favorites!

(Sorry about those Swedish excerpts for those of you who didn't know what they ment. They are from poems John-John wrote in the movie. They are based on a poem he was going to re-write, in his own way, for drama class. The excerpts are about his feelings for Elisabeth and questions he asks himself.)
