Personal

The Patient Donkey
by L. E. Quillen

We've been together a year
and a day.

You call me names,
but never my given name.

I wonder.
Am I real to you?

You hold me with threats
and promises,
a stick and a carrot.
And I guess

I'm a jackass
for letting you.
