And then came Katie's graduation ceremony. It actually depressed me quite a bit, because I don't really remember much about my graduation. All I remember is walking back to my seat after getting my diploma, and then Dirk hugging me first after the ceremony. He says that's one of the few things he remembers, too.
Barbara Walters, a television news anchor, was the guest speaker. Of course, her speech was completely inane. Something to the effect of following your dreams and not letting other people dictate your dreams to you. So, I started making smart-ass commentary to Dirk while we were sitting in the stands. That's something that really irritated me. After about 20 minutes of sitting there, my back was stiff, and my butt hurt. Deb showed up, and sat with us. Dirk was trying really hard not to laugh too loudly. I kept making references to Barbara's imagined prowess in bed, as well as theorizing on how she got her job. She's actually quite ugly away from the news camera, and she wears far too much makeup.
Some of the families there were intent upon showing their backwoods hillbilly heritage. They brought air horns, if you can imagine. Halfway through all the graduates getting their diplomas, Dirk was ready to kill them.
After the ceremony, we went out on the field. We left Deb behind, then ran out onto the field. We hugged Katie, hugged Chris, waited for Katie to find her parents, said goodbye to them, then Dirk insisted upon walking through the crowd of graduates and their families before we left.
We ran into John, of all people. He's one of Katie's ex-boyfriends, and the only one I've ever had a true fondness for. He's just so eternally optimistic and good-natured. The Golden Boy, I think I used to call him. Anyway, I got his attention, and he caught both Dirk and I into a hug. Then he hugged me separately, after which Dirk literally lifted him off the ground in a huge bear hug. We haven't seen him since December or January.
He told us that he and his half-brother, Fred, are planning on hitchhiking across the country. I was almost envious, except that I would never rely upon Fred for anything, much less so risky an undertaking as what they were proposing. I gave John my number, told him to call me before he left so we could get together. I doubt he'll call, he never remembers stuff like that. He looked exhilirated, happy. I wish I could be certain we looked even close to being happy.
I'll miss him.
I wonder if Glee's mad at me. I haven't heard from her in a couple days.
Talked to C-- again tonight. He decided to give me the exact formula to use if ever I want to get a buzz from cough syrup. I'm certain that sort of thing will destroy your stomach lining, at the very least.
Also talked to Roachboy. He got the impression that I wanted him back. No. Definitely not. Even if I wasn't with Dirk, I don't think I could stand to date such a paragon of virtue. Nevermind the fact that we didn't do very well together.
Sedge called right as I was leaving the house to go to the graduation ceremony. He wants to get together tomorrow night. I'm supposed to call him after 7:00. And we meet the other guy, Louie, tomorrow night, too. Aaron's knows the guy through a few friends, and think's he'd most likely be completely unsuitable. Something of a jock who knows nothing about punk. We'll see. He was awfully friendly.
