WHIMSICAL POETRY

Walls of Words
02/27/99

And still another fooled by my simple yet effective disguise
The cloak of I don't care, and scarves of hateful things said,
Serve their purpose, and though they are not quite lies
They are also never quite reality.

And knowing they may be transparent in the light
I, the master builder, begin to fortify the ramparts
Of my heart, so that my pain is out of sight
And too, my frailty.

So adept I have become at painting verbal walls
Unbreakable, and therefore so am I
Unless my heart, like Humpty Dumpty, falls
Shattering once again

Walls of words, I cannot allow others to see past,
Keep me safe from anyone who might touch my heart
For all that can be seen are the shadows cast
By the storm inside my soul
