Leaves Of Rime

Picnic by James

The trees broke forth in leaves of rime
A white spring in the winter time
And I and my fair maid went walking
In frozen silence softly talking
And underneath the apple tree
Where in the summertime she kissed me
She hurled a blanket on the snow
Bright red checks on white, you know
And set her basket by its edge
Unpacking every sandwich wedge
So in the cold we had our feast
Till sun had travelled far from east
We talked the more as time wore on
Until the time we should be gone
The basket pack, the linen fold
The leaves of rime sparked in the cold
And for dessert, said my fair lady
In the grove of apples shady
Reached she up into the branches
Causing tiny avalanches
The snowflakes shimmered in her hair
A million perfect diamonds there
From the branch an apple did grow
Made pink by the sunset glow
And cleft it in twain with a knife did she then
And under that tree did she kiss me again!
So I promised my love, and the fruit did we share
Made all of rime and never as rare.
