This technical illustration was created exclusively in Adobe Illustrator 7. I used a scanned image as a template, drew the parts on layers with the bezier curve, and created the highlights and shadows using blends.
If it would not have violated the assignment, I would have created the outlines in Illustrator, and painted it in either Photoshop or Fractal Design's Painter.
