Questions and answers about WWOOF
What is WWOOF?
WWOOF began in the UK in 1971 and in NZ in 1974.
WWOOF acts as a means of putting members in touch with
organic farms and growers. There is a variety of properties
spread throughout NZ, including farms, permaculture properties, market gardens,
communities and ventures in self-sufficiency in which organic growing plays some
part. Currently there are over 500 farms listed.
What are the aims of WWOOF?
To enable people to learn first hand organic growing techniques
To enable town-dwellers to experience living and working on a farm.
To show alternative ways of life.
To improve communication within the organic movement
To help develop confidence in becoming self-sufficient.
To meet interesting people and make useful contacts.
What do I do on the farm?
WWOOF provides the opportunity for you to live a experience life on New Zealand
organic properties. You learn organic farming methods by helping on the farm and
having ‘hands-on’ experience. Usually you live in with the family and are
expected to join in and cooperate with the day to day activities. The success of
WWOOF depends on mutual cooperation.
How do I arrange my stay?
Before a host will accept you as their guest you must become a member of WWOOF.
Once you are a member you receive your own WWOOF Book detailing all the farms in
New Zealand. To arrange your stay phone the host you wish to visit. It is
important to make arrangements in advance, don’t just turn up a the door.
During the initial phone call it is important to discuss details of the stay
such duration and what chores there are. A stay is usually at least 3 days or
may extend to weeks or months
depending on the arrangements that you and your host make.
How far in advance should a stay be arranged?
Don’t expect to be able to arrange a stay months in advance. Hosts can not
usually
predict what their situation may be this far in advance. Also, don’t expect to
be able
to get onto a farm the same day. Phone in advance, anywhere between a few days
to
a few weeks ahead of when you would like to arrive. It is usual to phone more
than
one host before you find a host who is free to take you.
What costs are there?
The only cost associated with WWOOF is the initial membership fee. You do not
earn any wages or pay any further fees.
What if I have some suggestions?
WWOOF relies on the feedback from its members. Any suggestions for improving the
scheme or broadening its appeal would be appreciated. If you have any further
inquiries or any problems then please don’t hesitate to contact us at WWOOF
headquarters.
