~ I Looked Within ~
I looked within and found a stone.
With hardened eyes and thoughtless fingers, I spat upon the stone and then began to pummel it. It scared me, and angered me, to see something with such rigid form and lack of imagination. Eventually the stone broke.
I looked again and found sand.
My eyes softened and my fingers mingled there, searching for something which I could mold and shape and make more forgiving. I was longing for more, and for some reason now sensed the promise of something better within that which sifted through my hands.
I looked one last time and found a diamond.
Misty eyed and with trembling fingers, I raised it to the light and saw goodness reflected. How blind I had been to overlook such a gem the first time. But its sparkle had been petrified, and lay hidden beneath the layers of my own gritty experiences. With a delicate touch I began to dust it off, and polish it. As I began to treat it with the gentle care that such a gift warranted, so it radiated with more brilliance.
Now when I look inside I see only the light. And I reach in and touch it, caress it, speak gently to it every day ... so as never to lose its luminance again.
