Be What You'll Be: Sally's Dream

But what will I be?

Scene one: Sally's sleeping face fades into an image of
Tommy's face. Tommy's face fades into Nora's.

The Voice Of Pete echoes through the images:
"Sally still carries the scar on her cheek to remind her of his smile..."

Tommy smiles. Sally's face fades into Nora's. Nora's face fades into Tommy's.
Tommy's face fades into Sally's. Sally begins to toss and turn,
seemingly in a sea of clouds. She sees Nora shaking Tommy.
She feels that Nora is shaking her. The clouds roll away to
reveal that she is being shaken, but it is by her Frankensteinian-Clifornian rock musician
husband.

Pete's voice echoes through the bedroom as Sally gazes blankly
into her husbands face:"Never mind, your part is to be...what you'll be..."
Sally sings, still staring: "But what am I? But what am I?"

Sally's Husband:
"It was a dream. Don't mind a dream.
A silly dream. Don't fear a dream."

Sally lays back down, tries to sleep with her head on his
shoulder. She cannot sleep. She sits up and looks in the
mirror. Her own reflection, in white like Tommy's, stares
back at her. She takes her husband's guitar from
beside the bed and bashes the mirror with it. The Mirror shatters, leaving
Sally swimming upward through clear water. When her head breaks the surface, she sings.

Sally:
"What I'll be was never clear to me
Though others always seemed to be so sure
My mother told me never mind
But now within my heart I find
That I am far away from what was pure.
  I can't forget a dream. Or a smile.
I can't let it go. What will I be?
  What will I be?"
She touches the scar on her cheek.
  "Whatever happened to Tommy?
  Whatever happened to Tommy?"

She scrambles out of the water and finds herself standing
at the base of a mountain. Tommy is just climbing down it.

Pete's voice echoes like a warning in her head:
"You knew from the start deep down in your heart-
You and Tommy were worlds apart.
But never mind, your part is to be...what you'll be."

Sally cries, her voice an odd echo of Nora's:
"Tommy can you hear me?"
Tommy holds still, his back to her.
  "Tommy can you see me?"
He turns.
"I knew from the start deep down in my heart,
That you and I were worlds apart... but...my part is to be...what I will be..."

She drops to her knees at Tommy's feet.

Tommy sings for the first time:
"Never to me! I looked to save the world
I lost all that ever meant the world to me.
   I cannot raise the dead.
   I cannot save you.
I cannot even help you to be free.
If I could turn back time I would turn it
If I could cleanse myself then I would weep
Until the tears washed my body white.
I'm still alive, I'm still amazed by glory
But I have known so little of the light.
   I can't undo what I have done
In thoughtlessness I've lost and found the sun.
I climbed a mountain, looked out on forever
Forever is a lonely place to be.
If you know love Then go and live with loving.
I cannot even tell you what you'll be.
I cannot even give you part of me."

Sally:
"I've been married five short years,
and every night I see your face
And a woman racked with guilt inside her eyes.
   I've been dreaming it's a dream
But some dreams can have meaning
Tonight I broke a mirror and I sleep within the light.
Nora's face is like a statue, she is living in the night."

Tommy:
   "Nora's dead.
   I killed my mother.
   I went through hell
   And I found heaven.
No one's been as high as I.
   No one as low.
No one goes where I have had to go."

The pool, which has been reflecting Sally and Tommy as
they sing to eachother, shimmers to reveal Sally's husband
watching them curiously. But when he puts his hand to the sur-
face to come through, it's hard as glass and keeps him under
water in the other world. Tommy's face grows hard and mocking.

Tommy:
"Do you believe that I'm the new Messiah?
Do you believe that I can save your soul?
Do you believe that I can wash you clean?
Then come to me and let me make you whole!"

He grabs Sally by the arm and splashes into the pond with
her. When he pushes her under the water to baptize her,
he feels her slip from his grasp and suddenly he cannot
find her. The pool is shallow...Tommy searches all of it,
but Sally has simply vanished. In a fit of emotion Tommy
falls on the bank and weeps violently till he falls asleep in the sun.

In her bed again, dripping wet, Sally embraces her husband.
Sally:
"All my dreams are starting to come true.
I wish that I could share them all with you."

Sally's husband shakes his head and they go to sleep
together, her wet hair spread across the pillow, peaceful in the moonlight.
