You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

This saying is true whether referring to meeting someone for the first time, or presenting written work. Appearance often, if not always, renders an immediate and instinctive reaction in humankind.

In the days since the late 1980's, we have been given control over our written presentations through the magic of desktop publishing. The masses are now able to choose and abuse fonts, font size, leading, kearning, and other aspects of typography only availible to typesetters.

Through font choices, margin and spacing settings, the visual design and appearance of written works offer an immediate impression. Traditional, formal fonts tend to lend works an authoritative voice. New scripts and display fonts are less likely to be as easily readable, but they give the work a fresh new voice.
