Victorian Friendship Crazy Quilt

This description was given when the quilt was for sale.

This silk and velvet quilt is circa 1890s . It is a rich, spectacular Victorian crazy quilt with almost no damage. It has never been used, is made "on foundation" (sturdy muslin)and is not backed. There are four small breaks in silk pieces.

It appears to be a "Friendship Quilt" -- different womens' names are written in pencil on the back of some of the blocks -- quite unusual for a crazy quilt. Some of the names are: "Mrs. Sawyer" "Lois S" and "Hattie Gibbs." Elaborately embroidered with initials, animals, flowers and leaves. Cats, owls (printed on fabric), bluebird, ferns and maple leaves. The owls shown are hand painted. There are also other handpainted images.

Size: 48 x 69 inches overall. Each of the blocks is approximately 11 and 1/2 inches square.
