ALONE
From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were-I have not seen
As others saw-I could not bring
My passions from a common spring
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I lov'd, I loved alone.
Then-in my childhood-in the dawn
Of a most stormy life-was drawn
From ev'ry depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sound that 'round me roll'd
In its autumn tint of gold-
From the lightning in the sky
As it pass'd me flying by-
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(when the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.
By: Edgar Allan Poe
Now that you've been basically introduced to my philosophy, I should probably introduce myself. My real name is Amanda Last. I am nineteen years old. I reside in the small town of Suamico, WI. Currently, I am a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. I am an Elementary Education Major and a Language Arts Minor. My family consists of me, my mom, dad and one brother, 13.
My interests are many and varied. One of them is, of course, writing poetry, and writing in general. I also am an artist. I paint and draw whenever I have the chance. I listen to all kinds of music at all ours of the day. Music is a large part of my life. I am unable to sing and I play the clarinet only averagely well, but i calms me and allows me to relax. I took dance lessons for fourteen years, starting when I was four years old, which may also play a part in my fascination in music. I am very into sports. I am on the college track team and greatly enjoy the competition, (our school mascot is the "Titans", hence the name thetitanpoet). There's something about achieving something that you thought was unattainable, about trying your hardest, about the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat, that makes me make it such a large part of my life. Aside from participating in sports, I love to watch them, well, some of them. I am an avid pro-football fan, and my favorite team is the Green Bay Packers. I live about five miles from Green Bay, so it makes sense. As far as school goes, i am an active participant in residence hall government. I am the president of my res hall and love my position. I get a great deal of satisfaction out of using my talents to help people. Even though I spend a great deal of my time alone, it is refreshing for me to help make the lives of others a little better. On that note, it may not be any surprise to you that I do a great deal of volunteer work in my home town. For the past four years, I have been a volunteer at the Northeast Wisconsin Zoo. In my quest to become a teacher, i felt that it was essential to obtain whatever experience that I could, so I do short programs about some of the animals in the children's zoo. While learning about the animals that have more or less become some of my closer friends, i have learned an unbelievable amount about people and how they think. The experience has been incredibly valuable to me.
As far as any other details, or goofy little dreams, ambitions, or wishes, there are a few. I might as well begin with a "favorites" list. My favorite color is aquamarine, in case you didn't guess by the colors selected for this page. My favorite song is "Eternal Flame", by the Bangles, my favoite movies are "Dirty Dancing", "Beauty and the Beast", "Dances with Wolves", and "Independence Day", (there are a lot more, but I won't list them all). My favorite tv shoes are Politically Incorrect and M*A*S*H reruns. My favorite author is Edgar Allan Poe, (surprised?). My favorite food is, oh heck, anything edible. My favorite animal is a snake, but I love seals too. I have no idea where that combination came from, but, it works. As for strange dreams and ambitions, a few things I would like to do before I die are to go bungee-jumping, backpacking through Europe, and go to Austrailia to see up close and personal, a great white shark. One other thing I also hope to do before I leave this world is to conquer my extreme arachnophobia. I will wrap a snake around my neck, but run the opposite direction at the mere sight of an eight-legged creepy. I get shivers just thinking about them. There's a lot that I want to experience while I'm here, most of it just to say that I did it, and I add new ones all of the time. It's just a fact of my life.
After reading this, (I hope that I didn't bore you tooooo much), I hope you have a little better understanding of who I am. That was my intention. You can only know so much from what I write. Every poem at this site was written by me, unless stated otherwise. I just thought that I would state that fact while I happened to be thinking about it. I hope you enjoy my site!!
