Madam Butterflying

I created ``Madam Butterflying" for the 1994 Hoffman Challenge. The technique used was hand appliqué, machine thread painting, and machine quilting.  The kimono was the challenge fabric, the obi and the piping around the edge of the picture are Thai silk. Her kimono was adorned with silk ribbons.  The butterflies around her head, her fan and the characters on her kimono were all thread painted.  I plaited her hair on the machine and added tiny pearls.  I dyed the fabric for the face, hands, and feet.  The background was machine quilted with tinsel thread using two shasiko designs.  She toured for a year before coming home.  I entered her in our local country fair in 1996 and she not only took a first place ribbon, but also Grand Champion. Grand Champion previously had been awarded only to a hand quilted, traditional quilt.  She was named by my son Michael.
