Nice Nostalgia Archive - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

This page is a list of answers to questions about the site. These are questions that you might be thinking about asking me (unlikely) or things you might be wondering about(more likely).

What is the Nice Nostalgia Archive?

The Nice Nostalgia Archive is a web site that takes a look at the UK culture of the Seventies and Eighties. It includes mostly pictures and text supplied by myself divided into a number of categories. There are a number of additional features - currently including a page of links and a guest book.

What goes into the archive?

Pretty much anything I can think of relating to UK culture in the 1970s and 1980s. Usually I add things important from childhood and teenage perspective, as funnily enough I was a child and a teenager during the period. Those being my formative years the memories affect me the most, unlike the bland adult ones.

When did the archive first appear on the internet?

March 1998. Seems so long ago now.

Why did you create a nostalgia site when there are so many others around?

I was relatively new to the net world when I created the site and didn’t know recent nostalgia was so popular.

Not many sites cater for both the Seventies and the Eighties and I am quite unusual in that regard.

How did the archive begin?

I was on an internet training course and part of the course was designing a web page and putting it on the net. Most people on the course were happy doing standard home pages but I wanted to do something that was a (what I considered at the time) a bit different. Recent nostalgia quite often crept into conversion during breaks and I used those discussions as the basis for the site. I did some research, scribbled down a few plans (that I revised several times) and within in a week I had written the HTML and had put it on the net.

Why on Earth did you make the background purple?

I thought purple was a nice colour to represent the period. My Raleigh Chopper was a similar colour. It’s also a good talking point and makes the site easier to remember.

What is a Raleigh Chopper?

It is a bicycle. Click here to find out more.

I have a great idea for a subject can you put it in the archive?

Suggestions are always welcome. It usually depends what I can remember or find out about on the subject. It would be a cool idea if you could add some info when you submit the idea, possibly some of your own memories that might help me write something decent about it.

Are you madly obsessed with the test card?

Only mildly. It really is one of the big differences between then and now. Now when you switch on a TV you are watching a TV programme or one is about to come on in a few minutes. Even live sport will show previous coverage if the weather is against them. It wasn’t the case twenty odd years ago (in the UK anyway). There they were girl and clown, imprinting on to the retina (and we worry about screen burn these days) accompanied with instrumental music or the test tone. If it wasn’t those two it would be pages from Ceefax although by the mid eighties a good sized section of the population already had teletext televisions and could choose which pages to view rather than watch the same 30 or 40 pages repeat every 10 minutes or so.

What do you mean by your reference to 1984 on the main page?

"1984" is a famous novel written by George Orwell. The main character’s occupation is to change information that was previously issued by the extremely oppressive government. If anything printed paints the government as bad or is just plain wrong it’s revised. In his world there is no documented "truth" it’s all changed to protect the present regime. The only real truth is the one that lives inside peoples’ heads and recorded history is a nonsense.

Do you write web pages professionally?

No not at the moment but I’d like too (as would ever other web master). If anyone sees this page and likes the style I would be very keen to do some web page construction outside the archive. I’d even do it for free if it was a non-profit making site.

I have a question that isn’t listed here.

Send me an e-mail at soupdragon74@hotmail.com and I’ll try my best to answer it.
