Katrina Porteous lives by the sea in North Northumberland. She also spends part of her time in Cambridge, where she once studied history, an occupation rather simliar to mining. She belongs to the North. She was born in Aberdeen, near a granite quarry.
In the past she has lived in Claifornia & Boston, USA and last year was Writer-in-Residence in the Shetland Islands, where she learnty a lot aboout North-ness.
Her poems are strongly conencted to place. Many of them are about the sea and the traditions and memories of the Northumberland fishing community. She is concerned with what makes places special, in particualr how the past of a place shapes its present and future. She writes her poems to be read out loud. Her first collection, The Lost Music, was published by Bloodaxe in 1996.
