  • Copyright infringement issues aside, I think storing music on my computer is fantastic. I have taken the lion's share from my own personal CD collection. I just listened to: I Should've Known Better (The Beatles) Enjoy the Silence (Depeche Mode) Takin' Care of Business (BTO)

While MusicMatch is on this fine song, I will now fling a question into the great beyond... What 1980s show played on Saturday or Sunday mornings and often featured BTO or The Beach Boys live? I have always wondered!

I started the Dr. Atkins diet today. I am not going to give a song and dance about wanting to be thin vs. fat. I am not fat, nor even overweight, actually. I am really turned on by the idea of gaining more energy by adapting to the low carb diet and I also want to lose 20 pounds. Though this diet has been criticized (even by me once), the tide is turning and it is generally accepted among M.D.'s as being effective, and even beneficial in terms of lowering cholesterol. I will perhaps update this journal more regularly as a means of support and to also chart the progress of my experiment. That does not mean publishing my weight or measurements as I am aware and will not need to be reminded. I will say how many pounds I have lost, my general opinion of the diet, and when I have cheated.
What I find unacceptable, however, is the lack of free and varied meal plans on the internet. I appreciate that weight-loss innovaters want to be paid for their reseach, however, I am talking more about the common sense (Lord, I wish!) healthy diet that consists of affordable food that should be available for free to all who seek it. There are so many conflicting stories on what is and what is not bad for you that many people are genuinely confused or put off entirely. I believe that the goverment might be well served to make intelligent, well-researched information uniformly available to the public so that we can battle the problem of obesity in this country.

Lord Jim is the first completed of 3 Joseph Conrad books I am to read from my Modern Library's list. I think I enjoyed most the vivid images of human faces and ships at sea that would come to my mind as I read. The day I finished Lord Jim, I picked up The Lord of the Flies and read that in a day. Funny how such things work! I am now a few chapters into Invisible Man, by Ralph Ellison.

One final note, I am learning new languages using traditional and modern methods. I will keep my count below. I believe Spanish is next, probably within a few months to a year. I periodically test my fluency by examination so I am not just arbitrarily going to decide. :) Truthfully, I took 4.5 years of Spanish in middle through high school, so I am close to being fluent. I am studying French and Irish Gaelic concurrently. The human mind is amazing!!
