The placid Lago de Ilopango straddles the borders of the provinces of San Salvador, La Paz and Cuscatlán, and is surrounded by volcanoes and mountains. This volcanic lake is the country's largest and one of El Salvador's most popular tourist sites, especially since it's so close to the capital. Dramatic cliffs overlook the green waters of the lake and in the early morning mist the area resembles a scene from a traditional Chinese painting.
