San Vincente was founded in 1635, when 50 Spanish families gatehered under a shady tree on the banks of the Rio Acahuapan to create a new town that would be safe from increasingly hostile Indian population nearby, The town was named after San Vincente Abad, a famous Spanish martyr.
The capital of San Vincente department is nestled in the Jiboa Valley, one of the most beautiful valleys in El Salvador, at the foot of the San Vincente Volcano. Rolling hills and fields of sugar cane surround San Vincente, which in spite of its rocky history is one of the most pleasant, relaxed cities in the country.
