Movies

(Page in progress)

OKay, people, I watch a lot of movies. There are zillions I still haven't seen, plenty of classics, blah blah. But I thought I'd ramble a bit about some of my favorites. I like to think of watching movies as research for my own work- photographs, etc. I don't know what your personal taste is of course, so my advice to you is that if you've seen one or two of these and liked them, check out the others. That's all I'm saying. Feel free to discuss or debate with me your thoughts on them as well as recommending new ones!(Link at bottom of page) KG

I don't even know where to start so I'll just jump in.

Raising Arizona

A hilarious COen brothers flick. I'm not sure how many times I've seen it but like many of their movies, it's worth watching just for the characters. Nick Cage and Holly Hunter, an interesting pairing, decide that their "domicile" needs a little bundle of joy to be complete. See how they solve their dilemma of infertility.

Arizona Dream

has a really cheesy video cover. To this day I'm not sure why I picked it up but I'm glad I did. I've seen some pretty mixed reviews about it but I have to say I'm a fan. It has Johnny Depp, Faye Dunaway, and Lili Taylor, plus Vicent Gallo rocks out. JErry Lewis has a bizarre part, too, as their uncle. The first time I saw it I was like, "Okayyyy..." but I tell you the images stick in your mind. It won't leave you alone for a couple days. Johnny and Vincent are brothers who are into the same bizarre woman, who lives with her bizarre daughter.Picture the four of them at a dinner table, trying to impress one another as Lili attempts to thwart the conversations by putting her pet turtles into the food and letting them roam the table. Picture Depp and the mother spending weeks in the yard, building flying machines. See it. You'll understand.

House of Yes

I am a massive Parker Posey fan. (Interview) I think I've seen almost everything she's been in. I can't recommend all of those movies, but this is definitely my favorite. "House of Yes", another one for the quirky, bizarre category, wins my prize for dialogue. You can tell sometimes that it was originally a play because of the way the lines are layed out, but it works. Don't be scared off by Tori SPelling, she rocks in her part. Marty brings his fiance' home to his twin sister, strange mother and younger brother. THe..unusual...relationships at work here and obsessions with the Kennedy family become quickly apparent and highly entertaining.

The City of Lost Children

A French favorite of mine comes from a couple of guys whose names I'll never be able to remember but whose work is unforgettable. "The City of Lost Children" is both beautiful and intriguing with its strange images and fascinating gadgetry. Oh yeah, and the midgets and stuff. There's a scientist who attempts to harvest the dreams of children because of his inability to do so, there's an underground group of bad guys with cyber-eyes, there's beautiful street kids stealing for them, there's a giant trying to find his little brother. I dunno, hard to describe. Just watch it. Also check out "Delicatessen" by the same guys.

Edward Scissorhands

.THis is an amazing movie. Tim Burton, need I say more? Just the characters alone are awesome-the nosy neighbors, the misguided but nurturing mother, the clueless dad. ANd the beautiful misunderstood monster from the wierd castle on the hill...(you just can't make Johnny Depp unattractive.)Burton taps into the sameness of suburbia and the allure and fear of something different. As always featuring great music by Danny Elfman. Winona Ryder is lovely as the daughter and object of Edward's affection but should never be blonde.:)

Fave Jarmusch Flicks

Another director that I have to praise heavily is Jim Jarmusch. He's an indie director but some people know his film

Dead Man

(probably because Johnny Depp is in it.Okay, look, I didn't intend for this to be the Johnny Depp fanclub page- I never realized until now how many of his movies I love!) A man spends his last dime traveling out west (late1800's) to get a job. He finds a hellova lot more. In black and white, methodically paced with perfect soundtrack by Neil Young. Beautiful, funny, intriguing, sad. Cameo by Crispin Glover, excellent work by Gary Farmer. I plan to watch it about 20 more times at least.(check out this site)

Night on Earth

An earlier Jarmusch movie (i think), slow in parts but hang in there, it only gets better as the movie continues. "Night" shows us a segment of time in different taxi cabs around the world and features various famous people like Winona Ryder,Roberto Bernigni, Rosie Perez.

I haven't found pictures yet for them but also must-sees by this rockin director:

Down By Law, Mystery Train
