BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
Jonathan Whipple and Anna Campbell
Jonathan and Anna (Campbell) Whipple There is some question surrounding the date of birth and birthplace of Jonathan Whipple. This much is known: he was the seventh of twelve children born to Benjamin and Silence (Bundy) Whipple and he was born on February 27. Sources disagree as to whether the year was 1793 or 1794. As his father sold the Vermont family farm on January 17, 1794, Jonathan's birthplace was probably Vermont if he was born in 1793 and probably New York (possibly Cayuga County) if he was born in 1794.
Anna Campbell was born September 22, 1794 in New York. The names of her parents are unknown.
Joanthan served as a private in Capt. William Watson's Company of the New York Detached Militia (Lt. Col. John Mahan's Regiment) from August 29 to November 29 in 1814.
Jonathan and Anna were married March 9, 1815 in New York. They had seven children, two of which died in infancy:
A Whipple genealogy compiled by Anna W. Foster in 1924 notes that Jonathan "was a fine singer, a leader of singing in church."
Jonathan died June 26 (one source says June 28), 1855 on a farm near Wellsburg, Pennsylvania. He was buried in Hope Cemetery near Wellsburg.
In 1860, Anna was living with her daughter Sarah in Elk Creek Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania. In 1870, she was living with her daughter Fannie, still in Elk Creek Township (the census notes her as "infirm"). Anna died March 16, 1871 and was buried in Hope Cemetery.
In 1995, Jonathan's grave marker was broken and leaning against that of his wife. The writing was very faint and only partially legible.
