A

Alebrijes - Originating from Arrazola in Oaxaca, these fantastic animals are said to be inspired by dreams. Made in either Copal wood or papier mâché, they are typified by bright, sometimes fluorescent colours. Their entire bodies are decorated with intricate designs and dotted patterns. Although usually mythical in aspect, they are based on familiar animals with certain distortions or augmentations.

B

Barro Negro (Black Pottery) - The pottery has a unique black colour and is either unfinished or glazed brillante. Craftwork in barro negro brillante, such as pots, cups or candle holders, can be found in the village of San Bartolo de Coyotepec in Oaxaca, which is famous for this form of artesanía.

N

Nacimientos (Cribs) - A strong feature of the Mexican celebration of Navidad (Christmas), nacimientos come in a range of materials and sizes which simply boggle the mind!

P

Piñatas - Clay or papier mâché pots embellished with paper and tinsel, piñatas are filled with sweets, and toys for children's birthdays or fruits and vegetables such as jícama or tejocote during the posada. Guests at either of these parties must attempt to break the piñata with a broom handle. Adults have the additional handicap of being blindfolded and spun around beforehand!
