Francis Picabia 1879-1953 French, Active in New York, and Barcelona
|
|
|
As much as Kandinsky, and Kupa, Picabia is thought of as one who formulated the
concept of abstraction in art.
|
Picabia brought images of twentieth century to a continent
|
Whose avant-gardism until then had no visual counter part.

Kupferman was drawn while living in Provencetown to similar subjects, such as
surreal aspects of nature Tamed and nature as chaos.

With the environment of the beach for inspiration he began a series of fluid
works in watercolor and oils which he would later complete in meticulous detail in
Boston. Using a technique considered extremely radical at the time. Pollack was also
experimenting at the same time with similar techniques in East Hampton.

Chapter 3. Poetry and Boose, or A Night at the Village Vanguard
|
Then Maggie Egri, the hat-check girl who doubled as songstress, and Oronzo Gasparo, an artist by day and Vanguard waiter
by night, were introduced by Eli. Their big number was "Rose of Washington Square." Maggie carried Oronzo piggyback off the
dance floor at the end.

|
In the summer of 1930, Preston Dickinson, along with the artist and his companion Oronzo Gasparo, went to France and
Spain to seek out a domestic and artistic utopia where living costs would be very cheap. They envisioned living magically
abroad and producing paintings for galleries to be sold either in New York or Paris. But with the Great Depression taking its
first tolls and the Daniel Gallery struggling (closing in 1932), the two artists saw their funds and optimism dwindle.
