Ginger sent me email *gasp*! |
All in all today was quiet. I checked mail often, hoping to hear from some of yesterday's leads, and in general the day flew by. When I got home, I had an email from Ginger, complaining of being a 'bad correspondent (DUH!:), telling us about their new MUD, and asking me what that call she got was about. Ginger is one of my 'stock references'. It's generally not a good idea to get people to give you references without warning them, but I did it to her anyway. I don't think I shot myself in the foot, and well, I got an email from her. I knew something might get a rise out of her. Anyway, I got on the MUD tonight, and they frobbed me. Frobbing is where you take someone who hasn't played the MUD and make them a wizard. Ok, so that makes no sense if you don't know what a MUD is. I'm a MUDder from way back. I guess it's the first really interactive thing I did online. MU*s are one of the talker/chatter type things to do on the internet. MUSHes and MUCKs are centered around characters and talking, while MUD's are centered around a game. MUD's are kind of like the old Infocom text-adventure games. You type a command like "west" or "get purple sword", and the computer moves you 'west' and tells you what the room is like, or lets you pick up the purple sword. You fight monsters, gain experience, and talk with other people. On a MUD you eventually reach a level where you "win". Basically, you become too powerful to play anymore, and they co-opt you to create more of the game. Each room, object, player, item, and you-name-it in a MUD is a little C file that someone coded. When you become a wizard (You Wiz) you get to make more of the game. Of course, when you first put the game up, you need lots of wizards to create it (so people will play it, wiz, and make more.....). That's where frobbing comes in. Ginger, Jason and I had been working on a MUD when they moved. They got this one up about two weeks ago. I'm hoping to do something nice there, and I'll let you know when it's "open for business".
