It's not so bad when you don't have to drive. |
WARNING!! WARNING!! WARNING!! Bread and Milk Shortage at local Grocery Stores Panic driven shoppers purchase mass quantities of perishables consumables today, fearful that they will be trapped in their homes for more than a week. "We don' normally eat this stuff," says Billy Bob Raymond, emergency shopper as he stuffed three loaves of Merita White and 4 gallons of Vitamin D Enriched into his cart, "but Maw always tol' us to get the bread and milk when it snowed."
Me, I'm not worried. We have a bread machine. And of course, the roads will never really get bad. It's only 3 inches, and most of that in the daytime. It still amazes me the reaction that we get to snow down here. Now, I've been in week long icestorms with the power out, and nothing to heat us but the fireplace. Once. When I was very small. Even the 'blizzard' of '96 wasn't that bad. I shouldn't have driving in it, since I had zero winter weather experience. I totalled my car, but I was fine. Once I'd made a committment not to drive it was easy. Even if you know how to drive in snow, it isn't safe. At least not down here. Since the snow freaks people out, they drive differently -- usually not better-- and it changes the way the traffic works. There were over 600 accidents today. Probably only a few were from actual ice-related skids. At least half of them were because people weren't paying attention, or were just nerve-wracked. I understand that nervousness...but it wasn't really warranted today. They even sent us home early from work. At four the director of IT wandered around, sending anyone who was still at work home--just in case. Azura picked me up soon after, since we'd already made plans to go. Personally, I wanted to ride the bus, but she was worried about me. Me, I was worried about her driving in it. Not because of her, she's used to it...no it's those other insane folks. The snow was beautiful though. Perfect for snowballs, almost enough for snow men. It will be gone in a few days -- off the roads completely tomorrow, I bet. Just a typical southern snow. I've heard we're going to have a rough winter because of El Niño, I've adopted a wait-and-see attitude. No matter what, I won't be driving in it-- can't get the license back until March 28th--so I'll just watch and listen. We didn't get any snow at all last winter. Oh, maybe a light dusting, not even half an inch. We never got enough winter weather to make driving treacherous. That's why no one here knows how to deal with it. It's just way too sporadic for us to learn. That's ok. I like it rare.
On another note, Informer and Hawk have moved up their moving date. Instead of moving in February, they are moving in January. We're going to move into their place, and buy some of their furniture. Now Azura and I have to figure out how we're going to pay for it all. I hope we can, I love their house (and their furniture)! I'm kind of sad to see them go. They are the only couple we were friends with since Moose and Squirrel left. We're going to have to get out, and meet some new people.
