Empress Barb wants me to introduce myself. Dearie me. This is always difficult. Hmm. The entry about me on the shop's web page is a start, I suppose. Hmm. There's the basic stuff: 33 going on 34. Never really been anywhere other than Perth, Western Australia. Fat. Brown hair and brown eyes. Descended from colourful Irish and Scottish and English types. And some seagoing Spaniards, too, apparently. Total Net.Geek. Love Macintosh computers, though despair of their future. Married to the splundiferous Michelle, aka the Spunkasaurus, four years come Valentines Day next year. Love sf and fantasy fiction, but also love mysteries/crime/mainstream. As I get older I develop broader literary tastes. I don't eat anything that has wings, lives in the ocean, was once an internal bodily organ, or certain vegetables. Certain kinds of red meat I don't want to know about, either (kangaroo, in particular, comes to mind). Love chocolate. Hate Asian cuisine. Hate loud parties. Love cozy chatting. Don't drink or smoke. Suffer from bipolar illness, take medication, all is well. Love dogs, hate cats. One main character in current book is a dog.

Study philosophy, but don't think I'm any good at it. Always feel way out of my depth. Interesting stuff nonetheless, and some questions continue to grip me and not let go. Love reading popular accounts of science, esp physics. Love the "woooooow!" factor. I hate buying clothes. Given money, will pretty much always spend it on books. Clothes are unimportant to me.

Food is a necessary chore interrupting things I'd rather be doing. People look at me funny when I say these things. The other day I read an interview with Oliver Sacks, neurologist and author, who said pretty much the same thing, and I was gobsmacked, and suddenly felt less of a mutant. Made note to read more of his work. His perspectives on understanding the mental landscape of people with neurological illnesses sounds very appropriate to the great question in sf writing of portraying alienness.

Hmm, there's probably tons that I've left out. Tons that deserves inclusion as much as anything else. In my years on the Net, I've had to introduce myself any number of times, and it's always strange and difficult, and I always wind up saying more or less the same things, but saying them differently, including some details here and omitting them there. Is it possible to provide a short introduction that is meaningful? That accurately represents its subject? I'm not sure.

Any questions, please feel free to write.

Oh, bugger, I forgot to mention the ceiling fan and the underwear. I installed the ceiling fan in the shop a long time ago, and added the carousel horses at a later date. Somehow I wound up also serving behind the bar. Everybody trusts me since I don't drink. Though I hit the Diet Coke pretty hard. The underwear appeared on the ceiling fan one day in the wake of party we had a while back. They were definitely a woman's unmentionables, too. Much debate followed on whose they might be. Eventually Empress Barb owned up to their ownership, and was a bit snippy about it, too. Ike spent a lot of time trying to peer up all the female listmembers' skirts, trying to spot someone lacking undies. For some reason, they let him get away with this.

Oh yes, one other thing: I get cranky.

E.W. & A.L. Bennefeld
My name is Elizabeth, but you may see "VisionStalker Wolf" in my e-mail address occasionally, since I was an *active* participant in the Wild Wolf Women of the Web mailing list for over two years. I'll turn 52 in November 1998, and on the 26th of September 1998, Al and I celebrate our 6th wedding anniversary. Al is a computer programmer, but for 18 years he worked as a field technician for Unisys. No children, but two Cocker Spaniels, Ladd and Brandy. I have a B.A. in Philosophy and English.

From my teens until age 44, I had atypical bipolar affective disorder, which turned out to be caused by an allergy to wheat, barley, oats and rye products, as I discovered through a self-designed food elimination program. I have spent a lot of time since the winter of 1990/91 catching up on having a life.

I wrote my first poem at age 9, in 5th grade, was accused of plagiarism, and didn't dare write anything else until college, 7 years later. During my first time through AW (a traumatic experience, by the way), the memory became very clear and phrases of the poem started to surface. "The Far Voyage" was a reaction to an early juvenile SF book by Andre Norton. In addition to poetry, I also write some short stories, and had my own monthly column, "The Internet Connection," in our ham radio club newsletter for a year.

Currently, I'm writing an Artist's Way column for Romance Foretold's newsletter; I've just accepted a position as RF's New Member Coordinator and am participating in their mentorship program, where I am working with a published writer to smooth out chapter one of my first novel.

Since 1984, I've had my own writing & copyediting business, The Written Word.

Jeannine Brandt

i've been here quite a while now, and lately i haven't spoken a whole lot, been pretty busy with school and stuff. i came into this group about a year and a half ago (not quite, but close enough). that would've made me about 19. i am now 20 years old and a junior in college.

i am fondly referred to as nean by all who i consider my friends. it's actually been shortened from neaner, which my father took to calling me when i was a baby. it's also a classic case of my little brother not being able to say jeannine (which would be my real name).

anyway, i am now an english major with a writing concentration (go figure). i write poetry and miscellaneous other short forms of prose--mostly fiction. someday, when i'm not busy writing dreaded term papers all the time, i will write a novel and become famous. whoa--i need more sleep, don't i? i'm having delusions of grandeur again! :)

jeff, the other young person on this list, is my significant other, so we can often be found together ('cept for right now he's over his head with work so he's stepped out for a while...)

oh, and another thing, as you can see, i tend to avoid the shift key at all costs!

Dr. Wes Browning

http://www.speakeasy.org/~wes
I mostly write poetry, humor, satire, and opinion for an activist newspaper based in Seattle. The paper doesn't pay directly, but sets up paid speaking gigs for me, from whence almost all my spending money comes.

Apart from that I write all kinds of short short stories and poetry for fun, in any genre that appeals to me at the moment, each short enough at least to unload at open mike venues around here (3 minutes to 7 minutes.)

Vicky Burkholder

I'm one of the moldy oldies of this here place, having been here at its birth. I don't "talk" much, preferring to sit back and listen to the group and see what's going on. I can be found behind the bar serving when Adrian's out and about or sitting with my west-coast clone, Terrie, sipping an Earl Grey tea the rest of the time.

Let's see, I go by Vicky/Mom since my eldest, Jeff, and his girlfriend, Nean, are both on this list. I have three other kids also (three in college, the fourth will be there next year). Age - 44; height 5'4; weight - too much for my comfort. Have worked a wide variety of jobs over the decades - secretary/receptionist; radio d.j.; computer specialist; teacher; cook; electronic sales; librarian, and, currently, acquisitions specialist for a college library. Am dyed in the wool Pennsylvania Dutch, having lived in central PA all my life. Have a BS in education and an MLS in Library Science (that and fifty cents will get you a cup of coffee!)

Writing/reading: science fiction; romance (especially historical); mysteries; fantasy. Also write regularly (unpaid, unfortunately, unless you count free books) as a science fiction reviewer for VOYA magazine.

Am currently attempting to get my first novel, and first non-fiction book published as well as some short stories I have out to the sf market.
