in response to J.B. Jackson's article "The Westward-moving House",
this project investigates the relationship of house for to the values
held regarding land, landscape, the structure of the family, and cosmology.
In Jackson's article, he traces the evolution of house form and
culture in America by examining three houses in the history of the fictional
Tinkham family.
As the fourth installation of "The Westward-moving House", this house of Tinkham family is set up as the first home for a young working couple who are behind a healthy natural life style. The house sits on a sloping rocky site overlooking Inks Lake. The first action of settling is taken by retaining top soil in this relatively rough landscape. Built around this domesticated land are the dining and living area with a bedroom wing and a studio wing, which form a south facing courtyard. The living space is extended outdoors through the large openings. A screened porch on the north side allows a great view to the lake. The idea of outdoor living is furthered by having a outdoor hot tub between the working and living quarter. The building is constructed of simple wood frames with shed roofs responding to the slope of the site. |
