Research Facility For Human Powered Flight

Austin, Texas
Fall 1995
Critic: Jun Watanabe

Designed in revelation of the pre-existing potential of the site, this research facility merges itself within the dramatic Texas Hill Country landsacpe. The experience of approaching the site through the rolling road of Hill Country draws one's imagination and prepares the researchers a perfect mood for entering the realm of human powered flight.

The building celebrates both functions of research and the storing of experimental models. A simple large curved roof spans between the two stories of research laboratories on the east side and four meeting rooms on the west. The roof contains the inspirations and realizations of human powered flight -- a huge volume for storing and displaying their models. The meeting rooms open out to the spectacular view of the west. While the simple curved roof facing the landscape provides a resonance between the building and the boundless land, a more articulated facade at the east corresponds to the scale of human beings.
