An Addition to Schindler HouseWest Hollywood, California
|
|
Originally
designed for two couples, Schindler house was composed of four studios
arranged in pairs around two outdoor living courts, and the two pairs were
linked by a kitchen from which a guest studio is projected. Following
Schindler's principle of spatial definition, the addition expands
the house with another pair, a home office and a bath house, which embrace
a swimming pool. An open car port structure acts as a transition from the
old building to new addition.
Design with the assumption that the house is becoming a single family residence, the separation of two outdoor courts is resolved by opening up the wall of Schindler's studio. The flexibility of Schindler's system allows for adjustment and extension. To maintain the scale and the underlying geometry of landscape, the addition is made by using the same modular system with material different from the original construction. |
