A passage transforms the scale.

York City Gallery

Summer 1996
Critic: Simon Atkinson

The expansion of York City Gallery's contemporary collections turns a very tight river front site into a celebration of art exhibition and public gathering. The site is a 24' x 68' lot in the historic warehouse district by Ouse River. With the intention of amplifying this tiny site, instead of enclosing the exhibition space, the central volume of the building is opened up to engage with the whole settings around the site. A big screen which could be swing out for projecting movies transforms the river into an outdoor theater. Circulation takes place in the void, which allows viewers to look at the 3-dimensional displays in various angles. The solid volumes on the two sides and the top contain the exhibition of smaller art works. Steps spreading out from the building at the main floor provide the public a perfect place for looking at the beautiful roofscape on the other side of the river.
