I SHUT MY EYES IN ORDER TO SEE
30" x 29" - machine pieced and machine quilted
September 1996
This quilt was a result of a challenge put
on by my weekly quilt group
called "Falling To Pieces". For a long time I had wanted to play with
the idea of perspective. This challenge turn out to be the perfect chance
to PLAY! I have a Paul Gauguin quote on my quiltroom wall that says "I
shut my eyes in order to see". This quote was the inspiration for the
quilt.
This quilt symbolizes the room in my head in which all my quilts
are designed. I chose not to have the walls clearly defined. I felt that
this room needed an ethereal feeling. The stars represent what I see when
I close my eyes and to where we all need to strive for. The abstract on
the wall is the mass of colour, the magnificent choices we have in fabric.
Not one piece of fabric is duplicated in this abstract design. In this room
I placed a door that is slightly ajar. This door represents all the different
ideas and skills that one needs to keep in mind during the creation of a
quilt. If I slam the door on one particular technique then when I need it
I would have to work so much harder to learn it. I tend to see that this
door is often wide open. I quilted the quote from Paul Gauguin on the two
borders.
