You And i Against The World

Synopsis:
We are often seen in people's eyes as associations and stereotypes. This occurs especially to victims of illnesses such as AIDS. And most of the time, such stereotypes are not constructive.

The main idea of the painting shows how everyone is being striped into stereotypes, hence creating this disarray.

The simple and similar profile silhouettes on the strips signify the basic things, which make us what we are -- Human Beings. Only that we come from different backgrounds (the different colours rendered around the silhouettes). The thin, red lines around the silhouette of one portrait tell us just how little differences there are between an AIDS victim and a non-AIDS victim.

The bandage gauze strips remind us that all the pain, which we cause people, is going to take a lot of healing and masks to cover. Yet we would know that there remains a scar.

The box-sliced up portrait in the background is of myself. It symbolizes how we're all being affected by our narrow-mindedness. And only by rearranging ourselves and realising that it's one's abilities and characters that make the person(and not the illness), then can we remove the inane discrimination-problem.

The work was handed in for "Art Against AIDS; Singapore Red Ribbon Awards '98". Unfortunately the work wasn't selected for exhibition at all, hence was returned rather promptly. The whole piece took about a month to conceive and render.
