I'm feeling quite fortunate to be here today, with the living, that is! A ferocious line of storms hit the area last night, bringing with it the most rain I have ever witnessed in my 37 years on this planet (my visits to other planets don't count!). A tornado warning was issued at one point, but we lucked out for the most part. I've never seen such lightning, the intensity was something I can't even explain, and the straight line winds were impressive as well. I had the added pleasure of driving to work in a blinding torrent of rain, lightning, and thunder. There were several times I couldn't even see the hood of the truck and the roads were flooding over, making it all the worse. When it was all said and done no tornadoes struck here, though several did touch down in surrounding counties. No official reports are in, but anywhere from 4.5 to 5.5 inches of rain are said to have fallen, all within an hour's time! Listening to the police scanner after getting to work, I realized that the main drainage creek for the city had overflowed - the creek that is ONLY four blocks from my house. The water rose high enough that boats had to be brought in to evacuate a whole neighborhood, a neighborhood only two blocks away! Somehow, especially the way my luck's been running, my 'hood stayed dry, not even any standing water in the street. Living here in the midwest I've seen my share of nasty storms, but that one last night has to rank in the top five!
Here's something I noticed while waiting on a train to pass the other day. Most of the cars of this particular train were tankers, and all but one had the following message: Open hatch before discharging load. The one lone car with a different message read like this: Open snatch before discharging load. I am glad to know there are others out there as twisted as I am! |
