This past weekend, my friend Pat and I were wandering around the Asian Grocery store at the local farmer's market. There was much fun as we were taking turns pointing out foods that we had never seen before. As well, we would occasionally try to guess an item's contents as much of the stuff in the store was imported and lacked English labels. As we left, Pat mentioned that she had seen a program on TV that did something really clever to highlight the some of the problems that illiterates face: they sent their reporter to a Chinese grocery store. I thought that was pretty neat idea although I noted that it might have been even better to send the reporter to a Chinese pharmacy because many food items at least have pictures of what their contents are in order to be accessible to all those who can't read the language of the exporting country. Pat smiled and said it was because of that very reason that there was much concern in Asia some years ago when Gerber started importing their baby food with jars that only bared an image of a little baby. |
