What really bothers me is that it seems that it now deemed acceptable to use pepper-spray like it was some aerosol deodorant to dispell embarassing protester odours. 

If I ever join a protest, I'm not going to wear goggles or a vinegar soaked bandana - that would only perpetuate this awful correlation.
