January 8, 2001

I was looking through some of my old magazines as I was doing some 'domestic therapy' (if shopping can be called 'retail therapy', I figure I can therapize housework) when I pulled out an old issue of Adbusters Magazine.

Of note was this picture:

This page followed a spread of similar cultural and political 'flashpoints' : the black power movement, women's lib, Paris '68, the anti-Vietnam protests, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the Zapatista uprising.

What makes this page so remarkable is the fact that this article was produced before November 1999 when the WTO tried to meet in Seattle (the photograph above is from an anti-globalization demonstration in London in June, 1999).

A quote: "Unprecedented resistance is building against the WTO. "The Protest of the Century", as the collective actions are being billed, will almost certainly be the largest corporate backlash North America has ever seen."

I've been reading a lot predictions for the year 2001 in mainstream press - mostly regarding possible movements of the Numbers Beast. I'm waiting for Adbusters' - at least they have a successful (albeit short) track record.
