The Berbers are related to the Phoenicians in two ways. First, linguistically, since the Berber and Phoenician are from different branches of the "Hammo-Semitic" Language Family; other branches include Egyptian (now defunct), Ethiopic, Hebrew, and Arabic. Second, the Phoenicians colonized North Africa where the Berbers live, so in numerous places there was an intermingling of people and culture. Currently Berber language and culture are being suppressed in some places in North Africa.
