Bitchy post I made to rmt-a about my bus trip:
So, I went to Arizona from North Carolina in December, and I went by
Greyhound buses, and yeah, it was kind'a long and all that, but they said I'd
be in Tucson by 10 am Dec 18, and so I was. All good and fair that way. Well,
tuesday, it was time for me to leave AZ and head back home. I was scheduled
to leave Tucson at 11:45 am, and arrive in Chapel Hill yesterday, thursday,
at 5:30 pm. This was nicely planned by me so that I would have plenty of time
to go home, shower, have a long, nice sleep, and be ready for my first day as
a sophomore the next day. Well POO on that.
After about 2 hrs of sleep (me and my friend stayed up most of the night,
trying to squeeze in as much talk and things as we could this last day of my
stay), we left Sierra Vista around 9.30, and got to Tucson around 11 am, well
in time for my bus scheduled for 11:45... Only 11:45 came and went by and no
bus pulled up to take me and the people in my line to El Paso, and I, being a
fool, rejoiced because it meant I could spend a few more precious moments
with my friend Jessica. After about an hour and a half, I was told they had
to find another bus driver, and that he was on his way down from Phoenix, so
we should be on our way in about 2 more hours. Unfortunately, the sleep
deprivation was taking its toll on my friend, so we decided to do the goodbye
then so she'd be able to handle the 1,5 hr drive back to her home. Hugs and
sadness and I-will-miss-you's followed, and then I sat down to listen to the
tapes she had given me (without marking the songs so it was all a big, big
mystery.)
And waited. And waited. The driver took 3 hours to show up. We finally left
around 5 pm. I finaly had the sensation of what a disgruntled postal worker
might feel. Ah well, I thought, at least I'm on my way! Bah.
The following happens:
I reach El Paso around 11 pm. Am told the next bus for Dallas will leave at
2:55 am (!!!) - I, and my fellow passengers sigh, but hang in there. Bus
finally leaves around 3:30 am.
Reach Dallas around 5:20 pm Wednesday afternoon. Am told my connecting bus to
Memphis will leave around 9:20 pm. Decided to take the news calmly and make
the best of the situation - I bought a phone card and amused myself by
calling my family back in Sweden ("Guess where I am? I'm in Dallas!!!"), and
after putting my stuff in a locker, me, my purple purse, and my Monkichi box
filled with tapes left to walk around Dallas for a few hours. I ended up
asking a random police officer if there was anything in particular I
could/should see, and he gave me detailed directions to the street where JFK
was shot, plus a long, long speech on the impact it had had on the American
people.
I walked over there and managed to find it (it's hard when there isn't any
tourist crowds to look for because it's late at night), took a picture, felt
a bit nautious, and had to leave. (I don't know, it seems I've been
unintentionally "Harolding" somewhat the past week [1]. First I went to
Tombstone and saw where the O.K Corrall shootout took place, then a few days
later I was taken to the Boothill graveyard where I snapped pictures of
graves while feeling like the most disrespectful idiot around, though I tried
real hard not to be [at least I wasn't posing next to various tombstones/tomb
boards with a big smile, like most of the other tourists there], and now...
pictures of the spot where a man was shot.)
My bus for Memphis left around 10 pm. I reach Memphis at 6 am, and get
rerouted, ending up going through places like Alabama and Georgia, which I
would have found very much thrilling if it weren't for the fact that I was 15
hours behind my schedule and dead-tired.
I finaly reached Chapel Hill at 8:20 am TODAY. Because of this, there was no
time for me to go home - instead I had to spend another hour on a bus,
commuting to my school, and attend classes looking and smelling like crap,
because they would have dropped me otherwise.
I'm hungry, I'm tired, I need to shower, my arms hurt from carrying my heavy
luggage from bus to bus to bus, my hair is disgusting, I have a fever, and I
have to go stand in an hour/2 hour long line to pay my tuition, and hopefully
get a few textbooks before classes next monday -- when this is done, I'll
catch another bus that will take an hour, wait for another bus, and then
hopefully get home and pass out.
POOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! bLAH.
I also thought I should share my long, long list of what I bought when I went grocery shopping Saturday/Sunday. "WHY?" I hear you whimper.. Because I am so proud of having bought real food that will last me for weeks and mean I won't have to go out and eat and spend money because "I don't have anything real to eat here dammit." And hey, it would be a great way to be a good stalker - you can shop like me!(e-mail for detailed information on Brands)
