Van Lierop's Bulb Farm
Second largest community in Pierce County, Puyallup (pronounced "pew-al-up") has
long been known for it's rich farming land and agricultural tradition. It is the home of
the Western Washington State Fair, largest in the state and ranked among the top 10
fairs in the nation.
A Puyallup tradition since 1900, the fair now draws 1.5 million
visitors from around the state and country every September. It features traditional
livestock and agricultural exhibits, professional rodeo, carnival rides and games,
hobbies and crafts, dozens of restaurants and specialty food vendors, and headliner
entertainment such as Willy Nelson and the Beach Boys.
Puyallup is also famous for
it's commercial bulb farms and celebrates an extensive Daffodil Festival every April.
This is one of the nation's top 10 floral festivals and includes the Grand Floral Parade,
Daffodil Junior Parade and Marine Daffodil Parade. The Grand Parade travels to
Tacoma, Sumner, and Orting as well, with over 130 daffodil laden floats, classic
automobiles, marching bands, and precision drill teams.
From Feb. 1 through
May 31, visitors will want to see the Van Lierop Bulb Farm, just east of Puyallup,
with it's acres of blooming daffodils, tulips and irises, a well-stocked gardening store,
and fresh-cut flowers for sale. Visitors can pick their own vegetables, fruits, and
berries at many U-pick farms in the area during the growing months. Fresh local
produce and flowers can also be purchased at the Farmer's Market in Puyallup's
Pioneer Park, held every Saturday from May through early September.
A historical
attraction is the Ezra Meeker Mansion, built by Puyallup's founder in 1890. The
17-room Victorian mansion is open for touring Wednesday-Sunday afternoons,
April-December.
