East of Puyallup is the town of Sumner, dating from 1883 and noteworthy as the "rhubarb pie capital" of the United States. Visitors stop in Sumner to attend a play at the Sumner Performing Arts Center, taste local vintages at the Manfred Vierthaler Winery, and tour the historic Ryan House, built in 1875. A Farmer's Market is held every Friday from mid-June to mid-Sept. in Sumner's new downtown park.
