Member Information and FAQ.
This page was last updated 05 July 2000
The purpose of this page is to enable members to edit their site information from this page, and to answer a few of the FAQ that have arisen since this webring was started.
If you have a site in The WorldsAway Members Webring and need to edit your site information (URL, site name, description, keywords, password), you may do so by entering your Ring ID, Site ID and password below. (Forgot your password? Just leave it blank and you will be given the option to have it e-mailed to you.)
Why is my site still in the queue?
Sites which are currently queued will remain in the queue until the correct control strip has been added to the main page on their site by the site owner. If your site is still queued it may be that either there is a problem with your code or you have not uploaded the WorldsAway Members Webring Logo to your own space. If this is the case, you should have received an e-mail about it.
If you have followed the steps listed, then mailed me to say that your site is ready, and you have still not been moved from the queue. Please send another mail in case I have made a mistake.
If a site is queued and the owner does not add the control strip to their page, the site will be removed from the queue by the ring co-ordinator and they will be invited to resubmit their site when they are ready to add the control strip. An e-mail will be sent to the site owner notifying them that this has been done. This does not prevent the site owner from reapplying for ring membership, it just makes it easier to keep the ring running smoothly.
What happens if someone who is after me in the queue adds their control strip and notifies you before I do?
The ring will still function correctly if a site with a higher ID number has been moved from the queue into the ring, even though a site with a lower ID has not yet been moved into the ring. For example, if sites with ID numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 7 and 9 were currently in the ring, and 5,6 and 8 were queued waiting for the correct code to be added. Site 7 would currently be 5th in the ring, and Site ID 9 would be 6th in the ring. When the queued sites notify me that they are ready, (and assuming the webring server is up!) they will then be inserted in the correct order in the ring. (Phew, do you need a coffee break after that paragraph? I sure do!)
Is there any advantage to having a low site ID number?
The positioning of sites within the ring is in theory not important as the ring is a circle, the end is where you began! The only time that there might be an advantage to having a low ID number is if someone starts navigating the ring from this homepage. It can be assumed that most people who decide to travel through the ring will see the control strip on one of your WorldsAway Members Webring sites, so therefore ring structure is not of much importance. Not many visitors will start here.
Just for interest, if you are interested in hits! It has also been observed that your site is in a good position if it is next to a site with a high number of hits. People are more likely to visit the next and previous sites in the ring than to hit "random." So if you are the neighbour of a site with a high number of hits, you will hopefully notice an increase in traffic to your website through being a Webring Member.
The Webring was down today, does this often happen?
On some occasions the Webring system will be down, most of the time it works perfectly, but occasionally there is a problem. One of the purposes of the back up list is to make it possible for people to still navigate through the member sites by using the information provided in the back-up list.
What do I need to do if I move my site to a new URL?
Please e-mail the ring co-ordinator if there is any change in your URL. It is important that the ring co-ordinator is kept up to date with changes so that the ring can continue to run smoothly. You can also edit your URL yourself by using the form at the top of this page. Please note that if you update your own site info, I will not be aware of it, so it is important that you e-mail me with the new information so that I can update the back-up list.
Do we need to upload the "wa-ring.gif" to our own server, couldn't we link to it on the webring homepage?
Yes, you could link to it on this site, but I ask that you please don't. It is only a small logo and won't take up much space on your own server. In the future this might change, so if you would prefer to link to the graphics on this site please don't do it now, but watch this space! Thanks.
Can the order of sites in the ring be changed?
Yes it can. The ring structure can be changed by the ring co-ordinator in the ring management area at the main webring site. After the ring has been running for a while I intend to change the order of sites. There are several options for restructuring the ring, for example, it can be restructured so that sites with the lowest hits are placed first, or sites with the highest hits are placed first, or a random restructure can be applied. The current ring structure is set according to Site ID. If I change the ring order in the future, it will probably be a random restructure. This will NOT affect your code in any way. Your ID number will remain the same, the only difference will be that you may have different neighbours in the ring. You will not need to make any alterations to your page if the ring is restructured.
Thank you for your interest in the WorldsAway Members Webring, if you have any questions or comments please e-mail me.
