Personality Types

Learn about yourself and maybe improve those ever-important interpersonal communication skills

I've been following various links, taking quizzes and answering a lot of questions. All to see if the category the quiz places me in is anywhere near an accurate description of how I think or act. Time to share my collected perambulations on the subject. If you have any to add to this list, drop me a line and tell me of any that you see I don't have.

An introduction to taking personality tests is nicely summed up at Salon magazine. There's a very strong impulse to belong, social creatures that we are. These tests let us figure out, albeit superficially, what group we belong to. Nothing wrong with that as long as you keep the entertainment factor in mind. I figure if I pick up even one insight that improves my sensitivity to alternate views, it was time well spent.

Inner Languages. Not a quiz, but a description of whether a person is Visual, Auditory, or Feeling. Friends have remarked how sensitive I am to noise pollution, so I suspect I'm Auditory. For example, barking dogs drive me nuts and I need periods of complete silence without even any background music.

I have the sneaking suspicion that I'm a Polymorph. I asked somone that knows me pretty well to read it and the first thing said was "Hey, this is you." This is another description of one type, so you'll have to get the book listed. It happens to be about categorizing men into 22 "types". Yick. Categorizing people by common traits is one thing, but doing so within either sex is highly distasteful to me. That said, the author of both the text and the site make some very valid points. And obviously I think those points can be applied to women as well as to men.
