The Kelisa or Asian Arowana is a prized natural asset that inhabits fresh tropical waters in this region. It is a graceful fish that displays a regal character and an alluring charm. There is no fish more beautiful and more interesting than the Kelisa which remains rare and magnificient.
Arowanas come in several varieties and the more common types in this region are the red, golden and green varieties. In nature, the Asian Arowana can only survive in unpolluted freshwater sites especially in slow moving streams with lots of weedy plants.
Prized for its mythical ability to bring good fortune, this uncommon and impressive fish is being avidly hunted. The shimmering Kelisa has been poached to near extinction, and the few that remain fetch exorbitant sums of money. The Malaysian Kelisa population is severely threatened and large numbers of the fish perish each year primarily because of carelessness on the part of humans.
