About Palau
The Palau Islands are located far west of the Micronesian Islands in the Pacific Ocean. Not counting the SouthWest Islands, Palau is composed of five islands, namely Babeldaob (Ochalchutem), Koror, Peliliu, Angaur, Kayangel, and at least 200 small islands known as "rock islands".
Palauans have their own indigenous customs and religion which are distinct from other districts in Micronesia. Their customs and religion seem to have one origin according to the myths told by older folks. The religion of Palau which is called Modekngei , meaning together or becoming one, existed before "white men" came. Today it's getting stronger and members are growing in number. During the time that Palau was under the German and later the Japanese administration, the customs became somewhat weak. Now, they are being revived and becoming strong in this current administration.
Palauans like to believe that they were the original inhabitants of the islands and that their religion and customs go back to the beginning of time. That's what motivates them to survive the influence of foreign countries.
The council of chiefs and the clan system existed with the children of Latmikaik during the First World and continued on with the children of Miladeldil in the Second World. Those that are still active today are believed to be legacies handed down to the Palauans from their ancestors.
