I found a very inexpensive South African wine that I would like to tell you about though you may not be able to find this so if you really are interested call Blanchards in Jamaica Plain and see if they still have some. Mike can help you. I first heard of this wine from Judy who found it in Vermont in a small town.

Robert’s Rock of Western Cape is a Shiraz/Malbec blend, 50% Shiraz and 43% Malbec, a very interesting blend that works well. This vintage that seems to be available at the moment is the 1998 though I first sampled the 97 and found that a bit fuller. The 98 will develop a bit more still. At just over $5.00 a bottle this is a wine worth running to the store for. Nice berry flavors, a little sassy in some ways and full in the front and a little lighter in the middle. The finish is not long but memorable and makes you want to go back to taste it again. It almost tastes like it has a bit of spritz and that comes from the youth of this wine and the grape varieties. For my cellar this is a must not only for the price but also for the playfulness of this wine. A great summer sitting outside with hamburgers and grilled chicken wine.
I always am on the look out for an everyday drinking wine, a bottle I can open at a moments notice and be happy about sharing with friends. I’ll try to find more of these gems to share with you.

Stay tuned and send me your favorites as well so others can try them.

A column on choosing a good wine, damn it!

We have someone in mind for the editor, but Brew You is definitely a possibility as well.

Actually, we have someone in mind for that, too. But you can still post a claim!

Sure: "the horror." But which is worse? Or better!
