Help For Jeffs Revolving Chat Door

REQUIREMENTS

To use Jeff's Revolving Chat Door, you need a 'JavaScript' enabled browser. The two browsers that I have tested this page with are: MS Internet Explorer 4.0, and Netscape Navigator 4.0 .

QUICK USE

Enter your Name, and Select a Chat Room. Then push the Go To Chat Room button, to enter the GeoCities chat room.

Note:

You must wait for the page to finish loading before you use it. You can tell when the page is loaded by checking that the LOAD/Done status field has switched to Done.

FEATURES

The purpose of this page is to allow easy navigation to the GeoCities Chat Rooms. With a few frills thrown in.

1. One stop shopping, for entry into GeoCities Chat Rooms.
2. Retains the current Name as you switch from one room to another.
3. Opens the Chat Room in a second window, so you can leave the door open (to keep your name and greeting).
4. You can add your own favorite names to the Name List.
5. Allows you to edit the selected Name.

GeoCities Java Chat Rooms

If you have a Java enabled browser, you can use the GeoCities Java Chat Rooms.

Form Fields

Name

Entry field where you can type in your own name, replacing the provided name. This field is retained when you Select Chat Rooms, but is replaced when you Select a Name or press Reset.

 

Client Type

Drop down list, letting you select whether you want the Java version of the chat room or not.

 

Select a Chat Room

Drop down list of GeoCities Chat Rooms. Select the chat room that you want to go to. Changing the Chat Room does not change the Name you have entered on the page.

 

Select a Name

Drop down list of predefined names. When you select a name, that name is filled into the Name Entry field on the page. You can then edit the Name Entry field changing the name to whatever you desire. Using the 'Add Your Name To The List' form on the lower portion of the page, you can add more names to this drop down list.

 

New Window

When Checked, the chat room page will be opened in a New Browser Window. When Un-Checked, the chat room page will replace my chat door page. Note: In MS Internet Explorer 3.0, this check box is ignored, a new window is always opened for the chat room (my preference).

 

Reload

Use this button when the page gets corrupted in Netscape Navigator (usually by re-sizing the window). This button reloads the Chat Door form portion of the page.

 

Reset

Resets the Name and Greeting fields, to the values from the Selected Name and Selected Greeting drop down lists.

 

Help

The Help Button, which brings up this page.

 

Go To Chat Room

Button you push, to enter the selected GeoCities Chat Room.

 

LOAD/Done - Please wait for this page to load completely

You must wait for the page to finish loading before you use it. You can tell when the page is loaded by checking that the LOAD/Done status field has switched to Done.

 

LOAD - You must enable JavaScript for this page to work!!!

If you do not have JavaScript enabled in your browser, the LOAD/Done status field will remain in LOAD status, and you will see the text You must enable JavaScript for this page to work!!!. Clicking on the text brings you to this help page, to the section on JavaScript Enabling.

Adding Your Name To The List Of Names

If you scroll down the page containing my GeoCities chat door, there is a form for adding you name(s) to the Select a Name list.

Note: the names you add to the list only appear on your computer, because they are kept in a 'Cookie'.

List Name

Entry field where you can type in your own name, this is the name that will appear in the Select a Name list.

 

Chat Room Name

Entry field where you can type in your own name, this is the name that will appear in Name Entry field, when you select the List Name in the Select a Name list.

 

Add

Adds the Name that you entered in the List Name and Chat Room Name fields, to the Select a Name drop down list.

 

Delete All

Deletes all the Names that you have added to the Select a Name drop down list.

 

Reset

Clears the List Name and Chat Room Name fields.

The Help Button, which brings up this page.

 

GeoCities Guidelines

• In addition to the existing content guidelines, GeoCities chat moderators will enforce the following chat room guidelines. Any offenders will be removed from the room.
  • Please don't post large or animated images to the room.
  • Abusive or harassing behavior will not be tolerated.
  • No profanity.
• If the room stops updating, hit the "Reload" button on your browser.
• Have fun!!!

JavaScript Enabling

First, you should have one of the these browsers, or a browser with compatible capabilities. You can click on one of these Trademark Icons, to go directly to their respective web site:

To Enable JavaScript in MS Internet Explorer 3.0

1. Pull down the 'View' menu.
2. Select the 'Options...' submenu.
3. Select the 'Security' tab of the folder.
4. Check the 'Run ActiveX scripts' checkbox.

To Enable JavaScript in Netscape Navigator 3.0

1. Pull down the 'Options' menu.
2. Select the 'Network Preferences...' submenu.
3. Select the 'Languages' tab of the folder.
4. Check the 'Enable JavaScript' checkbox.

Known Problems

1. Resizing in Netscape Navigator - resizing the window in Netscape Navigator causes the Select a Name drop down list to get corrupted. Press the Reload Button to correct the problem, if this doesn't fix it, press the Navigator Back button, and then re-enter the Chat Door page. I have tried to fix this, but can't figure it out.
2. New Window in MS Internet Explorer - the New Window check box is ignored in MS Internet Explorer 3.0, a new window is always opened for the chat room (my preference).
3. MSN Browser - My chat door doesn't directly work in the Microsoft Network Browser. Click your right mouse button on the [Chat] link at the bottom of the page. A pop-up menu will appear, select the Open In New Window menu item. This will bring up my chat door in MS Internet Explorer, where it does work.
