I went down to Gothenburg the day before the concert. The rain was pouring all the way from Stockholm, and things didn't look too good. The next day however when I woke up the sun was shining, and we could go for a swim in the sea. It turned out to be one of the few summer days here in Sweden. It was 17.5 degrees Celsius in the water and we really enjoyed it as true Swedish Vikings.
In the afternoon we went down town. There were lots of people all along 'the Avenue' (Avenyn) and everywhere they played Stones records. Soon it was time to walk over to Ullevi Stadium only a few hundred meters away.
In the evening it was getting cloudier. Not a day this summer without rain. About nine o clock the people on the field suddenly started using their umbrellas, and the crew was sweeping the stage clean from water. The shower eventually stopped and at nine forty...
After a great roar there he was, Sir Keith himself, walking out alone on stage and greating the audience. Then he started Satisfaction and the rest is of course history.
Sadly enough I was a bit disappointed with my seat in the arena. It was far up just below the roof, and the sound was really poor there. The guitars were drowned by the bass and Lisa Fischer could hardly be heard at all even in Gimmie Shelter. Further more I sat almost beside the stage, so I could hardly see anything on the large screen. I had to just look down on the small ant like figures far below me. Luckily enough I found these pages with some close up pictures from the concert taken by Bobby Holm.
I thought it would have been much better if they had played indoors like for instance in Stockholm at the Globe Arena, and they must have heard me saying that. Only a week or so later they announced an extra concert on September 8:th in the very same arena.
Anyway, here's the setlist you've all been waiting for from the Gothenburg concert:
No surprices but a good setlist. Especially the last part back on the main stage they really got the hole arena rocking. Even us far up by the roof could almost get that total feeling of a real Stones moment. So please come back again this year or next year or any year. We are waiting for you here in Sweden. You'll get the tickets sold out in no time.
