For Awhile
Inspired by my really cute German teacher in college. Man, I had a crush on her, but being the wimp that I am, didn't follow through. She'd always speak to me in German, thinking I understood her. Heck, she could have been telling me she wanted me right then and there, and I wouldn't have known.
Gumby's In A Coma
Inspired by my friend Jim, who wrapped Gumby in tape, stuck wires in him, put him in a clear acrylic box, and said, "Look! Gumby's in a coma!" This is the closest I ever got to having a hit; one night, sitting in Laurie's bedroom drinking really bad wine listening to KDVS, the college radio station, this song from the Alternate Learning e.p. came on at 45rpm (rather than the correct 33 1/3), and at first I thought someone had covered it. Then the deejay slowed it down. It's still pretty neat hearing your song on the radio, although apart from me and Laur nobody in the room at the time was impressed.
Hammering Girl
More than I want to reveal about Michelle. When I came up with the phrase "hammering girl," several of my friends though it was really funny. I didn't intend it to be, but I can see their point.
My Last Chance
Trying to be deep. Trying to be clever. Gary, the Coincidence bass player, made fun of it.
Just Another Sunny Day
A song that surprizingly enough works on at least two levels; is the person being sung to (or about) a child angry with his (or her) songwriting parent, or is it an errant spouse causing more serious heartache? I sure don't know, but you can download this song!; took about ten minutes on my 56k modem machine. The sound quality should be fairly high (at least it was on my Mac using RealPlayer), but when I listened to it on a Dell P2 using WinAmp through headphones, the only way I could get it to sound decent was to pan it hard right or left. Winamp said it was stereo, and it certainly was recorded and posted in stereo, but it sounded like mono to me. I guess I should once again thank Bill Gates for making my life just a little more needlessly complicated.
I've posted this little song at MP3.com. Click here to go there.
No Common Ground
Written shortly after Lib dropped the bombshell in a Burger King and left me. She didn't really leave me flowers, but most of the rest is pretty accurate.
She Shines
I was nuts about Nan. The feeling was not mutual.
She Tells You
Divorce will do this to you. I was trying to soften the blow by telling the story as if the woman were talking to the man, but you probably can't tell.
Tension
I used to say that I thought a certain amount of tension in a band was good for it, kept people trying harder and all that crap. Some of my bands were so tense it's a surprize we didn't come to blows.
