Paul Hunter makes his film directorial debut with Bulletproof Monk, currently being filmed in Toronto.  The movie is an adaption of the comic book Bulletproof Monk (published by Flypaper Press in 1999; distributed by Image Comics).  It is being produced by John Woo & Terrance Chang's production company Lion Rock Productions and being released by MGM.  The movie stars Chow Yun-Fat (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) as a Tibetan martial arts master who becomes a mentor to a young inner city kid, played by Seann William Scott (American Pie 1 & 2).  James King (Pearl Harbor) is also in the movie, playing a mob princess who joins forces with the Monk and inner city kid.  The movie has been described as a Matrix-type movie with many special effects shots.  A total of 250 special effects shots will be handled by Boy Wonder Visual Effects.

An official press release from MGM gives this synopsis of the movie:

"Chow Yun-Fat plays a mysterious monk with no name zigzagging the globe to protect an ancient scroll -- a scroll that holds the key to unlimited power. Now the monk must find a protégé, the next guardian of the Scroll of the Ultimate.  Kar (Seann William Scott) is an unlikely candidate, a streetwise young man whose only interest is himself, but when he saves the Bulletproof Monk from capture, the two become partners in a scheme to save the world from the scroll's most avid pursuer. Together, with the help of a sexy Russian mafia princess called Bad Girl (James King), they seek out, find and face the ultimate enemy in a final spectacular battle packed with dazzling effects and action."

The movie was shot entirely in Toronto, Canada from early March 2002 until early June 2002.  A budget of $52million has been mentioned by some sources.  Los Angeles premiere April 9, 2003; official North American release-date is April 16, 2003.
