Every once in a while, a band arrives sparkling from the outset; their dazzling first gigs and their brilliant first records a demonstration of extraordinary talent, invention and inspiration. The Sisters of Mercy were not one of these bands. Fortunately, it soon occurred to the band that being in a band was a more attractive option than having to get a proper job, and they presumably realised that it was going to be difficult to do this unless they took the idea of writing songs a bit more seriously...
