ALAN RUSHTON info

Alan Rushton (drums)

Magnificent drummer! It's a pity that he seems not to be active in music (I'd love to be wrong!). His career has been very close to Ray Russell, as they played together in many albums from late 60s to mid 70s. In fact, I only know 1 album with Alan that doesn't feature Ray too. :)

Turn circle is Ray Russell's first solo album, and it was recorded by:

Ray Russell (guitar)
Ron Matthewson (bass)
Royston Fry (keyboards)
Alan Rushton (drums)
Dragon hill is credited to Ray Russell Quartet, recorded in 1969 and comprising the same musicians: Ray Russell (guitar)
Ron Matthewson (bass)
Royston Fry (keyboards)
Alan Rushton (drums)
Other musicians appearing on the album are: Harry Beckett (trumpet), Bud Parkes (trumpet) Lyn Dobson (sax), Nick Evans (trombone).

Rites and rituals is Ray's next album. It was recorded in August 1970 by:

Ray Russell (guitar)
Daryl Runswick (bass)
Tony Roberts (sax, flute)
Harry Beckett (trumpet)
Nick Evans (trombone)
Alan Rushton (drums)
June 11th 1971: live at the ICA is a live album with: Ray Russell (guitar)
Daryl Runswick (bass)
Tony Roberts (sax, flute)
Harry Beckett (trumpet)
Alan Rushton (drums)
Live at the I.C.A. / Retrospective is the CD reissue of June 11th 1971: live at the ICA. But that's not all. While the 1st CD is the original live concert, the 2nd CD shows unreleased live and studio material recorded from 1968 to 1978. Other musicians appearing in the bonus tracks Ron Matthewson (bass), Pete Lemer (keyboards), Brian Miller (keyboards), Gary Windo (sax). This is a killer album! The live part is simply breath-taking! All the musicians play fantastic, but I'd say the wildest performances come from Ray and Alan.

Rock Workshop was a strange project, a sort of loose agrupation, where different musicians would join for the albums. I don't know if it was just a studio project, or if they also played concerts. The first album was recorded in 1970 by Ray Russell's usual mates, plus the great Alex Harvey on vocals:

Ray Russell (guitar)
Alex Harvey (vocals)
Alan Greed (vocals, keyboards)
Daryl Runswick (bass)
Brian Miller (keyboards)
Laurie Baker (keyboards)
Harry Beckett (trumpet)
Bud Parkes (trumpet)
Tony Roberts (sax)
Bob Downes (sax)
Derek Wadsworth (trombone)
Alan Rushton (drums)
Robin Jones (percussion)
The album was titled Rock Workshop.

Their second (and last album) was called The very last time, with these musicians:

Ray Russell (guitar)
Alan Greed (vocals, keyboards)
Daryl Runswick (bass)
Brian Miller (keyboards)
Harry Beckett (trumpet)
Bud Parkes (trumpet)
Tony Roberts (sax)
Bob Downes (sax)
Derek Wadsworth (trombone)
Alan Rushton (drums)
Tony Uter (percussion)
Running Man was another band formed by Ray Russell, with some of his friends, around 1972: Ray Russell (guitar)
Alan Greed (vocals, bass, keyboards)
Gary Windo (sax)
Harry Beckett (trumpet)
Alan Rushton (drums)
They released a self-titled album, Running Man. Finally, after almost 30 years, it has been recently reissued on CD. I like it a lot.

The band soon turned into Gary Windo Quartet. Approximately the same musicians:

Ray Russell (guitar)
Gary Windo (sax)
Mongezi Feza (trumpet)
Alan Rushton (drums)
Another joint project with Ray Russell. This was 1973, and its name was Mouse: Ray Russell (guitar)
Al Clare (vocals, keyboards)
Jeff Watts (bass)
Alan Rushton (drums)
They only released an album, Lady killer.

Next solo album by Ray Russell was Secret asylum. It was recorded in 1973 by:

Ray Russell (guitar)
Daryl Runswick (bass)
Gary Windo (sax)
Harry Beckett (trumpet)
Alan Rushton (drums)
And then, I haven't been able to trace more credits or bands with Alan. Can anybody help here, please?

QUESTIONS:

1. Was Alan a member of Bob Downes band, or did he play in Bob albums in a session basis?

2. Has Alan even fronted his own band? I once saw an ad for a 1970 concert, and he was advertised like that.

3. Was he ever involved with a combo called The Scratch Orchestra?
